Funerals

The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult times of life and can be accompanied by all
sorts of emotions – grief, heartache and pain, but also gratitude for the life and person they
were.

When someone dies, there's so much to think about and so much to organise. We understand
how difficult this can be, and we can help you say your final goodbye in a way that really helps.

A Church of England funeral is available for everyone in their own parish, whether they were
churchgoers or not, and we will be there to support you any way we can.

If someone you know and love is in the final stages of life or has died,  the church is here for
you if you would like us to be.  Please get in touch if you would like us to visit or conduct a
service.

What to do

If someone is in the final stages of life, we can come and pray with them and you, if you would find this helpful.

The next step is normally to contact a funeral director, who will make the arrangements and get in touch with us if you’d like a Church of England minister to be involved.
If you’re not yet sure which one to use, you can find one near to you on the National Association of Funeral Directors’ website, or on the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) website.
The Funeral Director will talk to you about what kind of funeral you would like. You don’t have to be religious or a churchgoer to have a Church of England funeral – it is open to all, and it can be held in a church or a crematorium.

The Church of England has a helpful website to help you think about funerals, so do take a look at it: ChurchofEnglandFunerals

A prayer in times of grief

When we lose someone we love, we often struggle to find the words to express how we feel.
It might be that praying this prayer will help, for God is with you even in the midst of your grief.
Loving God,
I don’t know what to do,
or how to cope without this person I loved.
How do I do life without them?
Please comfort me with your presence,
be with all who grieve,
and give us strength and courage to face this and all the days ahead.
Amen
